If there is one thing I learned about being heavily involved in college, it’s that no matter how
hard you try, you will never be able to make everyone happy. I am frequently in situations where I have to choose between being responsible or going to hang out with my friends. While busy people will always have to make these hard choices, there are ways to try and find some sort of balance between work and life.
You are not perfect, and it is OK. Say what? This is probably the hardest realization that we have to come to. You simply can’t do everything perfectly. It’s unrealistic. Figure out what things you can put 80% of your effort into and what things need 100% of your effort. I am STILL trying to figure this out. The truth is, you will have to figure out what responsibilities matter the most to you because you simply will not be able to excel in all of them.
Have set work hours, and stick to them. Being organized and setting a schedule of when you are going to do your work is extremely important to find a balance. This will keep you accountable and allow you to visibly see when you have to complete tasks. Once you have completed them, you can go about your social life. Easy enough, right?
Manage your mind. There will be times where you will need to prioritize your mental health and drop everything. No matter how crucial it may be to complete an assignment, your mental and physical well being should always come first. Take the time you need to balance your mind. Spend time with someone who will lift you and support you. Unplug your devices. This is one of the hardest things to do. You have to be able to shut your phone off at some point and live in the moment. Constantly using your device will prevent you from finding the perfect balance. Make sure you make quality time true quality time!
Take a breath. You are doing amazing things, and it will all be worth it in the end.
