Press Release

Celebrating 50 years of Temple Public Relations Student Society Of America

(Philadelphia, PA -- April 15, 2019) -- January not only signified the beginning of a new semester at Temple University, but it also marked the 50th anniversary of Temple’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). To commemorate this occasion, the members of Temple’s chapter have planned and implemented several projects throughout the semester, the largest and most extensive being the Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference, “Being A Full Service PRo.”

Starting in September of 2018, the executive board and general body members of PRSSA, spearheaded by seniors Brianna Greco and Shania Genwright, organized this two-day professional development conference. Students scheduled the itinerary, panels and corresponding speakers, hotel arrangements, location, meals, ticketing and media outreach for the entire conference.

On March 22 and 23, students and communications professionals traveled from around the East Coast to network, listen to panel sessions and celebrate Temple PRSSA’s 50th. Jim Kenney, Mayor of Philadelphia, made an appearance in the morning to speak on the importance of public relations in his job and society as a whole. The keynote panel, PR the Age of the #MeToo Movement was a powerful discussion guided by well-constructed questions and interest audience questions for the panelists. The conference received press coverage from 6ABC, Bulldog Reporter and other notable sites.

Besides the regional conference, the chapter has engaged in several outside events to pay tribute to the 50th anniversary. One of Temple PRSSA’s key pillars is networking, and this is demonstrated in the alumni outreach provided by being a member. Throughout the semester, students have had the opportunity to get in contact with Temple PRSSA and PRowl PR alums through alumni takeovers on social media and by writing alumni spotlight pieces for the chapter’s blog.

The organization has also planned several social events like an informational session with the Philadelphia Union’s communications team followed by the game; agency tours and crawls in the Greater Philadelphia Region; and fundraising campaigns like the recent t-shirt sale and upcoming late-night food sale. Temple PRSSA also volunteers with the Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission once or twice a semester among other community service projects.

Temple PRSSA is the largest and longest-standing chapter in Philadelphia which makes the 50th anniversary all the more exciting to its members and alumni.
